BIPOLAR: THE NEW HYSTERICAL
There seems to be no end as of yet, of the ways that patriarchal society wants to equate being feminine to being mentally ill. The term “hysterical” we have dealt with in the article, “Why Think Like a Man is Hysterical”. We now must look at this current pervasive fad of a diagnosis called “Bipolar”.
Bipolar, is defined to be a mood disorder in which the subject affected tends to waver between elation and depression or to be predominantly on one pole mostly of elation or depression. Some have criticized this new diagnosis as being a fad and one motivated by a desire to assign normal human variation in mental states to some disease state needing psychiatric and also pharmaceutical intervention. This diagnosis or definition of bipolar seems to be a diagnosis of exclusion when schizophrenia is not considered and when there are present drastic swings in mental states of elation or depression. Herein lies a serious fault in modern psychiatry or psychology. Since schizophrenia is defined to be state characterized by a relative lack of emotion or flatness of affect, there is assumed that the natural diagnosis of Bipolar is a state of excess emotion. Current scientific evidence indicates that this assumption in psychiatry is actually in the same class as defining hysteria as a feminine disorder of the uterus. Some, it seems, who are perhaps themselves affected by an affective disorder of the schizophrenia type want to classify excess emotion as a disease just like lack of emotion. Ordinarily this would seem a natural or appropriate characterization but only if there is bias and a looking to cast stones on others just because the observer actually is the one who has a bonafied mental malady. Perhaps it helps one to feel better if one can label others as mentally ill or even to say that the opposite sex is just as mentally ill as those who have less emotion or flatness of affect. (Masculine brain). Since lack of emotion is traditionally a masculine trait, the male dominated or patriarchal psychiatric model wishes to label excess emotion as a disease state likewise. Research and even common sense show that this is far from the truth. As you will see, Bipolar disorder is not a disease of excess emotion but on the contrary, is one characterized by lack of emotion. The fact is that lack of emotion defines all illness mentally and the opposite spectrum is not also mental illness but in fact mental health. Yes, the more emotion you have the healthier you are. Women live longer and have less behavioral or psychiatric problems. Here is why.
We are all aware that schizophrenia is a disease of flatness of affect of lack of emotion. There is flight of ideas, lack of insight, and a general lack of sense or sensitivity or emotion. There is little flexibility in thought and concreteness in imagination. Profound insecurity results from profound lack of insight and leads to compensation via narcissism and delusions of grandeur. Alternately, there can be delusions regarding one’s true self also resulting from lack of insight. Often there are frank breaks with reality in the form of creating alternate personas. Not knowing who they really are often leads them to assume the role of being someone completely different…… the Colorado movie theatre shooter comes to mind. He assumed the persona of the “Joker”. Those who are confused in sex identity also fall into this category. Obviously if lack of emotion is associated with the above features, then logically it would follow that the more emotion one has then the less a person would have a mental illness of the above type. That is if one is logical in ones train of thought and or not prone to prejudicial judgments about women or even wishing to assign to women the illnesses just described. This misconception or prejudice led to the label of feminine hysteria. It was an attempt to scapegoat onto women the ills that are in fact masculine in origin. Since we now know that lack of emotion is the basis of mental disorders then we can see that labeling or scapegoating onto women all of the mental illness is terribly wrong and misguided. Women who are in fact diagnosed as mentally ill are suffering from an overly masculine brain disorder. It is an inner masculine excess that causes all issues with identity and mental health.
It is actually the way nature planned it. Men are physically stronger but weaker mentally. Women are physically weaker but stronger psychologically. Women have better coping skills as a result of being emotional. This in turn results in more patience and forethought. It provides outlets for dealing with stress. Crying or communicating ones feelings are great relievers of stress. Emotions do not cause impulsivity since emotions feel deeply and must process the input or stimuilus before a response is undertaken. Men on the contrary are autonomic in nature. Hardness creates for inflexibility and the desire to repel a stimulus and not process it. It is a reflex response that is the root cause of the almost entirely male phenomenon of impulsivity and physical violence. Violence statistics are not needed as proof here. Common sense proves the point adequately. Emotions are the foundation of mental health. Lack of emotion is the foundation of mental illness. Period. The lack of emotion causes a lack of grounding effect of the ideas and mental states. A mental state is not an emotion. Those without emotion are actually the ones who are prone to drastic changes or swings in mental state due to the lack of grounding. In a marriage or relationship it is more often the male who has a change of mind about affections. Women generally are more prone to try to maintain the family bond. Emotions create attachment in relationships. Since men lack emotion and therefore are more flighty(less attached), it is they who are more prone to flight of ideas and of flights in states of mind. Men are basically psychotic compared to women. Men love video games and are more superficial in their assessments of women from a physical attractiveness standpoint. Men are therefore less deep or profound than women. Women are composed of the elements water and earth while men are of the elements fire and air. Hot air is frequently changing directions or stirring things up. The earth is stable and water is the grounding mechanism that keeps women more planted in reality and on the ground. They must be this way for the sake of providing a secure environment for the raising of children. Women heve been the scapegoats in history with the hysterical label and now the the Bipolar label. Sure women have changes in mood, but a mood is not a change in mental state. A mood is temporary and is often recognized by women before others notice. Flights in states of mind are often not recognized. Moodiness and Bipolar are not the same. Moodiness is an emotional response to environmental conditions or circumstances. A flight in mental state is often without any known precipitating event or condition. It just happens. The wind (air) changes direction frequently and without prior notice. If you make a woman have a bad mood because of something you said or did, she is not bipolar. Having feelings make you affected by others behavior. Stop displacing your desire to play around or leave the family unit by calling the wife bipolar.
In practical terms, Bipolar is actually a variant of expression of schizophrenia. “Hebephrenic” describes an inappropriately happy or jovial psychotic person. It is a type of schizophrenia. Catatonia is a type of schizophrenia or psychosis in which the person is completely without vitality or even movement. Schizophrenia therefore already has the model for the truly bipolar state. So Bipolar is Schizophrenia, nothing else.
The field of psychiatry has much to learn and apparently is still fixed on labeling those who are the most sane or mentally healthy as mentally ill. Until psychiatry has a real scientific basis we will continue to have subjective perceptions and outright prejudices being touted as science. If it has not been diagnosed by tools or laboratory then it is subjective or opinion. Sadly, many are resisting any attempts to provide any objectivity to the field. The pursuit of fact or truth is the real purpose of any scientific endeavor or field of study. When none seek the truth or accept it when it is made plain, the medical profession is in a state of decay. Ladies and gentlemen, medical science has come to a standstill. Many no longer seek to find the truth but to maintain outdated methods that suit a particular political agenda. There are some determined to undermine scientific progress and will risk thousands of lives for their own selfish purposes. Some are so low as to even try to label those who speak the truth about mental illness as mentally ill. We must begin to question the real objectives of those who attempt to thwart human progress. It is an awful state of affairs if attempts to save or improve human lives are obstructed so callously. Instead of a healthy debate on the issue there is complete rejection and attempts to damage those who offer real solutions to complex problems. If there was any question of the state of decline of the American Dream then this must be sure evidence for it. How can we prosper if we embrace or even dignify ignorance? What democracy can ignorance create?
Stop this foolishness. Bipolar schizophrenia is the term that should be used and not just “Bipolar”. Mild or moderate Manic/Depressive psychosis is also appropriate. Bipolar does not exist outside of the area of the psychoses described above. Rainy days can make one be depressed and sunny days can cause elation. This is not mental illness but normal ebb and flow of human mental states. If you treat someone badly and they become affected by this do not label them Bipolar because you pissed them off!!!!!!!! Are you serious? Psychiatry and medicine in general need a wakeup call. Just because your model of science did not come up with the solution to the problems in the field do not act like a spoiled child who cries because someone else besides you did it. Many physicians are leaving the standard model of medicine for one that is more alternative. If this lack of appreciation for good science continues, we all need to find another source for our health care.
