“Push or not to Push: Understanding the natural process of Labor and Delivery”
by L Edward Davis MD “Nighteagle”
Indroduction: After reading this article, I want you to go and ask your obstetrician, “What causes a woman to go into labor?”. If he or she has read this article or the book on this subject he may know the answer. However, just as when this question was posed thirty years ago to my professors of obstetrics, the response was, “we don’t know.” In fact, one implied that they did notcare. What this implies altogether is that the medical field still has things to understand. It is unfortunate that the business and bureaucracy of medical obstetrics do not foster an interest in the truth in this heretofore mysterious process of labor and delivery. Do not blame your obstetrician personally however, for his or her lack of understanding of this process. It is a cultural dilemma partly due to not having an appreciation for things natural. It has befallen the “Modern Medicine Man” to shed light in this area.
Native Americans and all so called primitive cutures aspired to live within the bounds of natural processes. The intuitive brain has an advantage in understanding natural rhythms by being connected emotionally to them. Similarly, the female sex in most cases has the intuitive ability to read genetic chemistry. The scientific mind has to study and test certain phenomena to reach a conclusion. Left brain function has dominated human culture up to this point, much as the left hemisphere is considered dominant as far as handeness is concerned. Most persons are right handed due to this dominance. This is a physical dominance however and since we all have left and right brains the time is coming as we evolve that we all learn to appreciate the real strengths of both right and left hemispheres. The physical world naturally in time gives rise to a balance with the spiritual world where physical assets become equal to and not dominant to the spiritual. The physical will eventually therefore not be dominant at all. There is a time and season for everything. Let’s therefore stop the madness of right versus left. It is insane self hatred because the left brains and right brains of all humans are all equal in girth and weight. It is self destructive therefore. Left wing and right wing politics do not apply and are excluded from this discussion. Natural processes are in place that dictate that we embrace our selves, right and left, so that we do not continue in this destructive process. Loving Native culture therefore means we love ourselves. Loving women means we love ourselves. The hatred of the right brain is self hatred. It is suicidal. Yes, humanity is now in the throes of a mass suicide if we do not learn to look with respect to our non dominant selves. Computer hardware is worthless without software just as brain hardware is useless without software or emotions for memory storage. The human brain is therefore the most highly sophisticated computer system ever or ever will be designed. Emotional stupidity results from not using software, emotions or intuition to understand chemistry or polarity. Left brain dominance promotes lack of emotion, lack of intuition or insight into our real selves. So if you have no insight and are proud of this, you are really just a product of the left brain dominant sick society. Right brain is self knowlege – wisdom. No brain can function with only one half working. Right brain against left brain is a disease that is going to destroy the body of mankind. This article is the fruit of right and left brain coming together to understand this wonderful process called labor and delivey. The miracle of birth is now less mysterious.
So, “Push or not to push?”. That is the question!
A review of the literature on this topic of pushing during labor and delivery reveals that some agree with this premise that birth is indeed a passive and involuntary process. Voluntary or coached pushing on the otherhand, is noted by some to actually cause vaginal tearing, cervical tearing, and low oxygenation states in the fetus. Breathing during contractions is really what is needed and shown by some to imporove oxygen delivery in the baby. See the article published on gentlebirth.org. entitled, “Second Stage Labor: You don’t have to push”. by Nancy Tatje-Broussard. This article along with this one should help give some direction to those in the obstetric field in regards to what and what should not be done in the labor process.
One thing in particular of note is the old process of placing the woman in supine position with feet in stirrups. This can acutally cause a decrease in oxygen supply to the fetus by placing the large gravid uterus directly onto the inferior aorta and vena cava. Many women around the world give birth squatting or other positions that do not place the women in the supine position. Moreover, hopefully one day, doctors may consult our services to determine the best time for phenotype compatiblity sake to deliver a child by surgical means. This is for those circumstances where a planned or even emergency birth is necessary. This is rare howeve,r as most statistics indicate that up to 95% of births can occur naturally. In fact it is imperative for women to take a stand and demand that a natural as possible birth is done to help ensure the phenotypic compatibility of parents and offspring. Labor and delivery are therefore genetically controlled and should not be interfered with unless medical cirucumstances necesitate appropriate intervention. Below is an excerpt from the article entitled, “The Biologic Clock of Human Reproduciton and the Initiantion of Human Labor”. This was published in 1993 in the book entitled, “The Breath of Life”. For a full version please order the book on this site.
“Abstract: As in other species of nature, a biologic clock seems involved in the initiation of human labor. This mechanism of initiation of labor has heretofore mystified obstetricians. The evidence for this clock is revealed in this study via a comparison of the birth data of parents with their offspring with the results showing an apparent similar environmental or seasonal correlation of the birth of family members. The results of the study show that in addition to having similar genetic makeup, offspring also share similar environmental conditions to their parents with regards to the time of their births. The stellar configurations are found to be environmental influences and apparently comply with the evolutionary law that genes are selected by the environment. Specifically, the signs of the constellations of the celestial equator known as the zodiac, were found to be peculiar to families with regard to the positioning of the sun, moon, and ascending signs in these constellations. Compared to the probability of similarity in a random population, family members were strikingly more similar with regard to these parameters.”
From the same book is taken this excerpt from the article on “Pineal and Placenta: Organs of Labor”. “A review of the current literature reveals that the predominating conclusion drawn by the various researchers is that the fetal pineal gland, in conjunction with the maternal placenta and hypothalmus are the mediators of the labor process ( with the fetal pineal hormones being director of the activities of the other two structures). The pineal, fetal or adult, it seems is the antenna that connects the biology of the living being to the rhythms of the environment.”
Since DNA ultimately comes from the universe, it is apparent that the universe will be represented in the phenotype and even genetic characteristics of individuals. It is no accident for example that one rare family had the grandmother, mother and daughter all born on the same day in July. If you know anything of astrology or comsmobiology you can readily see that the sun sign, moon sign and time of birth or ascending sign will be transmitted to offspring in the family. The signs act much like mitochondrial DNA that are a non changing or immutable portion of genetic characteristics that become transmitted without fail from generation to generation. In conlusion, if and when you decide to deliver a child, please realize that destiny and biology come together in this wonderful and miraculous process. Indeed, the breath of life at birth is the beginning of spiritual existence. Under most circumstances this can occur naturally. However there are many conditions and circumstances where medical or surgical intervention are necessary for the life of mother or offspring. Life of mother or offspring are more important than the ultimate phenotype that results from this action. Generally, if a birth is given a trial of labor the differences in phenotype are reduced. In other words, the greater the difference in time between a surgical or induced birth and the natural one will cause phenotypic variance with the parents and offspring. This difference in time can therefore influence the diseases and other non disease markers that can be displayed in the child. Many who have had children born surgically will attest to subtle if not frank phenotype differences in the children born in this manner. Again, it must be stressed that life of mother and child take precendent over other concerns when the situation arises that intervention is necessary or inevitable.
So, push during labor if it seems involuntary.
Some research indicates that some women feel compelled to push. Just appreciate the difference between voluntary or volitional pushing as opposed to involuntary pushing. Just ride the rhythm of nature that is birth…..just as the fetus rides the waves of contractions to enter a world guided by a light at the end of a tunnel. This seems to be the way nature planned this wonderful event of labor and delivery. Near death experiences remind or tell us that birth into this world is the analogue of birth into the spiritual world. Each is guided by a light at the end of a tunnel. This life on Earth is the learning phase while the next is the reward phase. This may explain why babies cry at birth and people actually seem to smile at death which is rest from the school work that is life. Completed school work is rewarded with a pass grade to the next level and a needed rest or recess.
Birth or death……it only depends on which side you come from. Birth and death therefore are like night and day. They follow each other for eternity. The spiral nebula in the galaxy is the stellar analogue of the DNA coiling doulble helix. The spiral of DNA and that of the spiral nebula indicate that the goal of life is upward not backward. Each phase of human existence grows…. dies….and then gives birth to a new spiral in the continuum that is life.Everything must be reborn in order to live.
