Insight vs Outsight: a closer look at brain intelligence
If some people are more blessed with insight, then are there some who have more “outsight”? In psychology many mental illnesses like schizophrenia are characterized by being poor in insight. If a person is poor in insight , can they alternately be more inclined to have more outsight? I understand this is a new term called “outsight” but it must be considered since all opposites in nature exist to balance the naturally occurring polarities. Night and day, light and dark etc. are all polarities that permeate the fabric of life and language. So, from here on we will use this new term called outsight to define that which is opposite to and even complementary to insight.
Insight is defined in psychology as “the capacity to gain an accurate and deep intuitive understanding of a person or thing”. More accurately however, insight is self knowledge. Some call it emotional intelligence. Indeed emotions and the capacity for them are inherent in the capacity for insight. Emotional people are receptive and introspective. Introspection and insight are dependent in that one cannot have insight if one is not introspective. Deep is another term associated with insight. Basically, people with feelings and emotions are the persons with insight and those who have flat affect or no feelings are classified as having little or no insight.
The typical mental illness with no insight is schizophrenia. Flat affect, concrete thinking and perserveration are hallmark features. It is basically referred to as a thought disorder leading to flight of ideas that are not well grounded in reality along with the inability to interpret proverbs due to concrete thinking. These people are ones who are stuck in the childhood stage of emotional under-development. Many of the features of schizophrenia are found in young children. Childhood is therefore schizophrenia. Ask a child to interpret a proverb and you will get a very concrete response just like with the schizophrenic.
“A rolling stone gathers no moss” is interpreted by the child and schizophrenic to mean that no dirt or moss can attach to a moving or rolling stone or object.
The thought disorder is clear here. A mature brain can look beyond the obvious and get a deeper understanding of the issue at hand. Since insight is a function of emotions and the brain is predominantly a giant receptor made up of water or emtions, then we can say that the brain is where emotions and insight resides while outsight is a function of the brain stem.
People with more outsight than insight then are the ones who are less emotional but more analytical in nature. Instead of introspection the brain is focused on external inspection or “extraspection”(another new term). Everything is seen as outside of the individual since the emotions are not used to connect to the perceived object or person. Hence the person with outsight is externally analytical while the introvert is more internally analytical. One is self knowledge oriented while the other is more inclined for greater environmental knowledge of the visible world. Men by definition are of the more outsight types since men tend to the visual while the female is more intuitive or non visual. The outsight brain is analytical and technologically oriented since the brain is good at breaking things down into its component parts. The male child for example will play with his toys until he begins to tear them apart to see how they work. Women put things together and men tear them apart.
Herein lies the crux of the male/female conflict or dilemma. Women synthesize and men analyze.
This is all general in nature but women do synthesize new life in the womb. However, it is now clear that the greatest minds will have high function in insight and outsight. The brain that is pure insight does not do well in the class room or on standardized tests, while the one with poor insight will be terribly lacking in common sense. Most human adults function with both insght and outsight. High insight may make for a slow learner but the high outsight type is foolish and prone to violence and destruction. High outsight with no insight is the narcissist and the manipulator. The brain stem is where the id resides and these types can be highly analytical but also egomaniacal and primitive. Crying for children is actually anger. Anger for adults is also crying. Anger is crying that is directed outwardly for those high In outsight. Crying for the high insight is not anger but deep sentiment and feeling. So anger is not deep feeling or emotion, it is the lack of it. Anger is childish crying.
So lets clear up what really is intelligence. There are two halves to the brain. One is where insight is processed and the other half processes the brain stem inputs. The left brain is considered the analytical side and the right side is the insight or introspective side. Left is masculine dominant and the right is feminine dominant. The right side is the memory side since memory is a function of emotions. It is the software component of the brain as a computer. Hardware is masculine. Software drives or controls the hardware. This is why Matriarchy is the natural order folks. Matriarchy is adulthood of either gender. The greatest minds have function in both halves and are high in insight and outsight and is found in males or females.
Sadly, we live in a world where right and left or insight and outsight are at war politically. Insight should be sharing wisdom with outsight. Outsight should be sharing technology with insight. Maturity is insight and immaturity is outsight. They need each other. Only mature persons should run the world. The immature mechanize it. Stop the madness.
